A Transformative Reiki Retreat in Big Bear

Every so often, I get to photograph something that feels like witnessing real-life magic. This four-day Reiki retreat in Big Bear was one of those experiences… a gathering filled with meditation, release, connection, and love. Hosted by Alison of Serenity Oasis, the retreat brought together four women who came to the mountains not only for rest and renewal but also to step fully into their journey of becoming Reiki-certified.
The setting itself felt like it was holding space for transformation. Big Bear, with its crisp mountain air, quiet stillness, and natural beauty, was the perfect backdrop for this kind of deep work. Over the course of four days, there were moments of stillness in meditation, moments of laughter and connection in community, and moments of powerful release that reminded me how healing energy moves when people come together with intention.
The yoga practices were led by Emma (@namastemma), who guided the group through flows that grounded them into their bodies while opening space for release and renewal. Every morning and evening practice seemed to mirror the energy of the day: soft, restorative movements paired with breathwork that encouraged presence and surrender. It was such a beautiful balance to the energy work happening in the Reiki training itself.
And of course, none of this would have been complete without the nourishing meals prepared by Chef David. He crafted every dish and snack with care, fueling the retreat with flavors that were both wholesome and vibrant. There’s something about gathering around a table for intentional meals that deepens the sense of community, and his food carried that energy perfectly.
By the end of the retreat, the women received their Reiki certification, but what they walked away with was so much more. I witnessed breakthroughs, healing tears, contagious laughter, and the kind of quiet moments that stay with you long after the retreat ends. There was a sense of growth, love, and support woven into every part of the experience, and it was truly inspiring to see each woman step into her power with grace and confidence.
What I loved most about documenting this retreat was the authenticity of it all. Nothing was ever staged or forced, every photo was simply a reflection of what was unfolding: the beauty of women supporting women, the courage to release old stories, and the joy of stepping into a new chapter. We even documented some headshots for these new Healers to help them in the next part of their journey. Big Bear itself seemed to echo that energy, holding the group in its calm embrace as they moved through their journey.
This retreat was a reminder of how powerful it is to pause, reconnect, and invest in your own growth. To witness this group of women not only earn their Reiki certifications but also leave with open hearts, lighter spirits, and newfound clarity was a gift in itself.
