What to Wear for Family Photos in Los Angeles
Hint: Jewel tones, textures, and coordinated chaos are welcome.
Planning Your Outfits Doesn’t Have to Be Stressful
I know figuring out what to wear for family photos can feel like just one more thing on your never-ending list. But breathe, you don’t need to match perfectly or shop for a whole new wardrobe. You just need a few intentional choices that let your family's personality shine (and photograph beautifully).
As a Los Angeles family photographer who loves wild toddlers, messy buns, and dogs who won't sit still, I can tell you: you don’t need to change a thing, just come as you are. That’s who your people love. That’s who we’re here to honor.
My Personal #1 Favorite Outfit Tip? Jewel Tones.
Think: emerald, mustard, rust, sapphire, maroon, terracotta.
These colors pop on camera without being loud. They add depth and warmth to your images, especially during golden hour in LA. Plus, jewel tones tend to flatter everyone and bring out those natural skin tones we love. Jewel tones are timeless, flattering, and always bring depth to your photos without stealing the show; they add richness, warmth, and a little extra wow without overwhelming the moment.
Do We Have to Match?
Nope!! (And actually, please don’t.) Instead, think coordinated, not identical. Pick a color palette (like navy, rust, and cream), then let each person wear something that fits within that world.
Add interest with:
Simple prints (think stripes, gingham, tiny florals)
Layers and textures (denim jackets, knits, linen rompers)
Accessories (hats, boots, cozy scarves for cooler days)
This keeps everyone visually connected without looking like a time machine to 2002.
Is a White Outfit Okay?
Yes! I love a crisp, clean white dress or shirt, especially paired with bolder tones. It can look amazing in the right light, but just keep in mind:
Avoid neon or optical whites (they can blow out in the sun)
Add texture or layering so it doesn’t look flat
White can be absolutely stunning, whether it’s a flowy dress with bold jewelry, a crisp tee and jeans, or layered into a mix of warm, earthy colors.
What About the Kids (and Pets)?
Let them be comfortable, but intentional. A cozy romper, overalls, or a flowy dress in your color palette looks amazing and still lets them run wild. And if your dog’s joining? Coordinate their bandana or collar with your palette!! Yes, I care about that and yes, it looks adorable.
Where to Shop for Photo-Friendly Outfits
You don’t need to reinvent your whole wardrobe, but if you’re looking for something special, these are a few go-to favorites I recommend to my clients when they want timeless, photo-ready pieces.
For Moms, Maternity, or Center-of-the-Family Energy:
Free People- Romantic, boho, and beautifully flowy. Their dresses are full of texture and movement, which means they photograph like a dream.
Baltic Born- flowy, flattering dresses in luxe fabrics and rich tones
Vici Collection- modern with some boho, good for layering and textures
Reclamation- dreamy, heirloom-style lace gowns (if you're going full goddess energy)
Lulus- affordable, chic, and great for finding jewel-toned gems
For Dads, Partners, or Masculine Looks:
J.Crew- classic chinos, button-downs, and knits in muted tones
Abercrombie- surprisingly good fits, soft fabrics, and earth-toned staples
H&M / Zara- if you want modern and affordable pieces that still look elevated
Buck Mason- clean, neutral basics that look effortless but feel luxurious
For Kiddos:
Jamie Kay- adorable, neutral-toned, soft-textured pieces for littles
Zara Kids- trendier looks with great movement
H&M- budget-friendly and cute, with earthy tones and linen blends
Rylee + Cru- higher-end, muted, minimal, and cozy
Pro tip: Once you pick a color palette (like navy, rust, and cream), try shopping within that range across your whole fam. Mixing textures, patterns, and layers within a palette photographs beautifully.

TL;DR: Here’s What Photographs Best
Jewel tones (rust, olive, mustard, deep blues, burgundy)
Coordinated, not matching
Simple prints + solid layering pieces
Comfortable, movement-friendly outfits
Texture, accessories, and personal touches
Bonus: What Not to Wear
Neon colors (they reflect light weirdly)
Big logos or graphic tees
Super tight or uncomfortable clothes (you’ll be adjusting constantly)
Anything you wouldn’t want immortalized in 10 years 😅
