One Year, So Much Love | A First Birthday Family Session
There’s something really special about photographing a baby’s first birthday.
It’s not just about documenting that they turned one. It’s about documenting everything that happened in that first year… the tiny baby they once were, the way they’ve grown into their own little personality, and the people who have loved them through every stage.
For this sweet family, we spent some time outside celebrating their little girl turning one. We kept things relaxed and playful, letting her explore, cuddle with mom and dad, and just enjoy being a one-year-old.
A first birthday is obviously a huge milestone, but sometimes the reason for taking the photos goes a little deeper than celebrating the fact that a baby is turning one. For this family, they wanted to document this particular moment with their youngest daughter, to have photos of just the three of them that captured what life looks like right now, while she is still so little and fits perfectly in their arms.
There is something so special about intentionally setting aside time to document the youngest member of your family. With each child, life seems to move a little faster, and it can be easy to get caught up in the everyday routines without realizing how quickly those tiny stages are passing. They wanted to remember her exactly as she is at this age: her little hands, her expressions, the way she reaches for her mom and dad, and most importantly, how small she still is.
While her first birthday was certainly part of the reason for the session, this wasn't simply a birthday photoshoot. It was a family session dedicated to their baby girl and this season of life they are in together. We spent time outside, played, cuddled, let her explore, and captured the little interactions that happen naturally between parents and their baby. Some of my favorite images from sessions like this are often the ones that aren't really about posing at all, they're about remembering what it felt like to be together.
I think that's one of the best reasons to have family photos taken. Years from now, these images won't just remind them that she turned one. They'll remind them of how tiny she was, how she looked sitting between them, what it felt like to hold her, and what their family looked like during this very specific chapter. And she will have photographs someday that show her not only how small she once was, but how loved and cherished she was by her parents from the very beginning.
A first birthday is worth celebrating, but sometimes the greatest gift is simply giving yourself the opportunity to stop for a moment and say, "This is us right now. Let's remember it." 🤍
